comment: Version-7 algorithm processing was performed during August 2011 and continues forward for active instruments. Use data files with a date of August 2011 or newer. The RSS SSMIS geophysical dataset consists of data derived from observations collected by SSMIS instruments carried onboard the DMSP series of polar orbiting satellites. These satellites are numbered: F16 SSMIS Oct 2003 to present, F17 SSMIS Dec 2006 to present, F18 SSMIS Nov 2009 to present. Daily files of SSMIS geophysical parameters consist of data mapped to a regular grid complete with data gaps between orbits. Two maps exist for each parameter, one of ascending orbit segments and the other of descending orbit segments. Data on each of the maps are overwritten at both the high latitudes (where successive orbits cross) and at the 'seam' or the region where the last orbit of the day overlaps the first orbit of the day. Water vapor and cloud liquid water are given in kg/m2 (which is equivalent to 1 mm or 0.1 g/cm2).

At GHRC, RSS binary files are translated to netCDF-4 for archive, and for distribution to netCDF users.
